The performance gap is usually a conversion problem

Business Performance · 5 min read

When results do not reflect the potential of a business, the cause is rarely a shortage of ideas. It is the conversion of strategy into decisions, capability, action, and results.

Most established businesses have a reasonable view of where they want to go. Ambition is documented, priorities are named, and the leadership team can describe the intent clearly. Results, however, are produced somewhere else: in the daily decisions, conversations, and behaviours of the organisation.

The gap between the two is a conversion problem. Strategy has to become decisions. Decisions have to become capability. Capability has to become action. Action has to become results. Each handover is a place where performance can be lost quietly, without anyone deciding to lose it.

Diagnosing that chain is more useful than debating the strategy again. It tells leadership where the constraint actually sits, and where an intervention will produce commercial return rather than additional activity.
